Slice Of Heaven.
There’s nothing like the sweet taste of a watermelon to bring summer into full swing but cutting into a slippery, green melon can be a horrible pain. Here’s a technique used at hotels and restaurants that works like a charm. It’s fancy, it’s technical and you’ll be the talk of the block!
1. Use a kitchen brush and wash all of the dirt off the watermelon. You can do this in a sink or use the garden hose.
2. Always use a large, heavy, sharp knife and a secure cutting board. Place the melon horizontally on the cutting surface and begin by removing both ends of the watermelon.
3. Choose a side and begin to slice downward to cut the rind off, slicing all the way to the opposite end of the watermelon. The first slice of the rind tends to cut off more of the flesh than the remaining slices. Continue until all of the rind is gone.
4. Make 4-6 even, vertical slices across the watermelon, stopping halfway through. Now make 4-6 even vertical slices, perpendicular to the previous slices, stopping halfway down the melon. This will form a crisscross pattern on the top of the watermelon.
5. Once you’ve created a crisscross pattern halfway through the watermelon, slice it horizontally to create cubed pieces. Continue down the watermelon until you reach the halfway point. You will need to repeat the process with the remaining melon, this time slicing and stopping approximately 2-inches from the bottom of the watermelon.
6. If you want bigger slices, simply make one vertical cut in the center and then proceed with your horizontal cuts.
