The Skinny on Margaritas

We’ve all fallen into the trap of sucking down a 3000-calorie margarita while inhaling a basket of chips at a Mexican restaurant only to wake up hating ourselves in the morning. There’s nothing better than the flavors of a fresh margarita but we need to dump the calories! Skinny margaritas are lining the shelves but we have a couple of recipes to make your own low-cal margs at home. The key to these margs is having lots of fresh limes on hand.

Lime squeezing tip. To get more juice from your limes, place it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. Roll on the counter to loosen all of the membranes and you’re good to go!

Coarse salt

2 ounces (1/4 cup) silver tequila

3 tablespoons fresh lime juice (about 2 limes)

2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

1 teaspoon light agave nectar

1 lime wedge or round, for garnish

Coarse salt for rimming glass

1. Pour a layer of salt onto a small plate (preferably one just slightly larger than the top of your margarita glass). Slice off a small piece of lime and run the wet edge of the slice along half of the rim of your glass.

2. Dip the top of the glass into the salt at a 45-degree angle and roll it from side to side to catch the salt. Add ice cubes to your glass and set it aside.

3. Fill a small cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the tequila, freshly squeezed lime and orange juice, and agave nectar. Put on the lid and shake for 30 seconds. Strain the liquid into your glass and garnish with a slice of lime.
